For over two decades, One Piece has been one of the hottest manga series around, and thanks to a long-running anime adaptation and the excellent live-action One Piece on Netflix, there’s never been a better time to get acquainted with Monkey D. Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hat Pirates crew.
Naturally, there’s a lot of catching up to do if you’re diving into the manga source material, but the good news is that collected volumes of author Eiichiro Oda’s work are never in short supply. Best-sellers in various formats, you can easily jump into the world of One Piece, with each volume showcasing the imaginative art, gripping storylines, and fascinating power struggles of explorers seeking fame and fortune on the Grand Line in an effort to be crowned the next King of the Pirates.
Currently, there are 104 One Piece volumes that have been translated into English, and you can even grab the majority of them in handy box sets. As an entry point, you can check out the East Blue and Baroque Works saga, which comprises the first 23 volumes of the manga. The East Blue saga is what the Netflix show adapted, and Baroque Works saw Luffy explore various kingdoms before his eventual clash with one of the first major antagonists of One Piece, Crocodile.
The second box set focuses on the Skypeia and Water Seven arcs (volumes 24-46), the third box set collects the Thriller Bark, Sabaody, Impel Down, Paramount War, and New World arcs (volumes 47-70), and the fourth box set contains the Dressrosa, Zou, Whole Cake Island, and Reverie arcs (volumes 71-90). Each volume is printed in the same size format, so when you’re not reading through Luffy’s adventures, the arranged collection looks fantastic when arranged on a bookshelf.
If you don’t want a full box set, you can also check out omnibus editions of One Piece. These chunky books contain three volumes each, and you can grab them for $15 each–many of the books are discounted by a few bucks, too. Perfect for anyone looking to fill in a gap in their One Piece collection, or even just a nice gift for fans of the manga series.
